For an FHE lesson, we talked with Karter about work and helping out, and we gave him a chore chart which he thought was really cool (yes, he's young enough that he thinks having responsibility is fun!). He's been doing pretty well at his 3 chores each day and loves to cross them off. What was cute to me, was the other day when I was washing dishes. Karter came in and said, "Wow mom, you're doing such a great job! I didn't know you had chores too! Well, I think those dishes look really great!"
I explained to him that moms and dads do chores all the time, but I was glad he noticed and thanked him for the compliments- he's such a good boy.
By the way, does anyone else get as frustrated as me that the kitchen NEVER stays clean for more than a few minutes!? I just can't believe how often we clean it (and I mean really clean it well) and then it's a mess again so quickly! Please tell me I'm normal!

My kitchen and it seems like my entire house can never stay clean...and I don't have kids.
First of all, that is SO cute that he noticed and complimented your chores... what a cutie! I must agree that things never "stay" clean at our house. Its like pulling weeds, no matter how often you do it, they'll keep growing and there will be more to pull next time you walk by.
Grrr. I hate cleaning the kitchen. Unloading the dishwasher is my least favorite chore of all time.
Definitly! It is a never ending job. So what is his chore chart like? I need something like that for Emma. What 3 jobs does he do each day? Emma really struggles with chores, so I need to get on top of it. Sigh!
His three chores are:
1) set the table
2) Put all his toys away before bed
3) Happy Helper (this means I'll ask him to do something(s) during the day and if he is happy to do it and doesn't complain then he's a happy helper and gets to check that square off too.)
As for what it looks like, I just drew out a chart with all the days of the week, and a picture of some dishes, some toys and a smiley face, for each of his chores.
That is really cute that he complimented you on your chores. He is a really cute boy.
Ahhh, the kitchen. For the most part, ours is often messy, too. But, I have just recently tried to change a few things in order to group our messes together, and it has helped quite a bit.
I will either make our dinner when I am doing breakfast or lunch. (I get it ready at breakfast if it goes in the crockpot, at lunch if I am going to bake it later). This way, I get MOST of the mess making done at once, and all of the cleanup done at once. This is especially nice come dinnertime--when my kids are most ornery waiting for Nate to get home and eat dinner. Now, I can play with them and try and help to be happy rather than simply tell them "Just a minute" as I try and get dinner ready.
Some things I can't get done that early, but for the most part I can get a lot of it ready earlier in the day. And, it is so nice to do just a light clean-up after dinner because I have already cleaned up the preparation dishes earlier in the day.
That was a lot of writing! Sorry! But, it has been helpful around here.
Karley, that is so cute! I bet you complement him the same way. Great job!
The thing I struggle with is being happy while I'm doing my chores so I that I can set a good example for my children...maybe a smiley face chart would help me, too!

Max has complimented me before and it just warms your heart, doesn't it? I wish you guys lived closer...Max could really use a boy friend...we have a lot of girls in this neighborhood. Good job on the chore chart...you've motivated me to get that going again.
